Healthcare in Thailand

Healthcare in Thailand main image

The healthcare system in Thailand is based on insurance and is one of the best in the world, ranking 6th in Asia and 17th globally.

In 2002, the National Health Security Act came into force, which to this day provides free healthcare for all residents of the Kingdom.

State insurance is represented by three programs:

  • Benefits program for government employees
  • Social security program for private sector workers
  • Universal coverage program for the entire population
  • Since 1995, government healthcare spending has increased by 30%. Today, there are over 1,000 public medical institutions and more than 300 private hospitals in the Kingdom. Thailand has the largest number of private hospitals in Asia, 59 of which are accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI), the gold standard in healthcare. A prime example is the Bangkok Hospital in Phuket.

All medical institutions can be divided into three types:

  • State hospitals supported by the Ministry of Health. The Ministry is responsible for public health services, state hospitals, and medical care. Although state hospitals provide quality services, there are usually long queues, and the equipment may not be as advanced as what is offered in private medical institutions. Services for local residents are free and covered by the insurance card issued by the National Health Security Office. The cost for foreign citizens is lower than in private hospitals.
  • Private hospitals - the basis of medical tourism, offering high-quality medical services, excellent customer service, and top-class specialists.
  • Non-profit organizations, such as the Red Cross and World Vision.

Medical Equipment

Thailand stands as a pivotal player in the production of medical equipment among ASEAN countries. In 2020, the market turnover reached a staggering $19.93 billion.

Medical Tourism Flourishes in Thailand

Since 2003, Thailand's government has been proactively working to establish the nation as a prominent medical hub on the global stage. This initiative has driven significant improvements in the quality of healthcare services, particularly within private medical institutions. The primary factors contributing to this success include the affordability of medical treatments, exceptional customer service, a worldwide reputation for high-quality services, and a well-developed tourist framework.

Tourism plays a crucial role in attracting medical travelers from all corners of the globe. Thailand, often referred to as the land of white gold, offers breathtaking natural beauty and landscapes that not only enhance the overall experience but also positively impact health and well-being. This, in turn, ensures a consistent influx of tourists.

Under the new economic model "Thailand 4.0," the government places significant emphasis on the healthcare sector, recognizing its importance for investment and future development within the country. At present, the Thai Ministry of Public Health's strategic plan for 2016-2025, "Thailand: Wellness and Medical Services Hub," is being executed to further solidify Thailand's position as a leading destination for medical tourism.

Medical tourism - a journey with the purpose of obtaining professional medical services.

The Kingdom of Thailand is renowned for its advanced medical infrastructure, highly skilled professionals, and world-class medical services. As a medical hub for not only ASEAN countries but the entire Asian region, Thailand has secured a well-deserved fifth place globally in the Medical Tourism category, owing to government support in healthcare and medical tourism promotion.

Investment in the healthcare system continues to grow due to several factors, including an aging population and a steady increase in foreign patients. This growth has led to continuous improvement and expansion of medical equipment, clinical trials, and the establishment of numerous medical companies within the Kingdom.

Thailand employs state-of-the-art medical equipment and offers a five-star hospitality experience alongside its highly qualified professionals who provide medical services in various languages.

The country provides a comprehensive range of medical services, including cancer treatment, organ transplantation, heart surgery, laser vision correction, and cosmetic surgery.

Phuket: A Future Hub for Medical Tourism?

By 2028, Phuket is preparing to launch an ambitious project called the Medical Plaza, which aims to position the island as an international medical destination. Phuket is a candidate for hosting the specialized EXPO 2028 exhibition, where the Kingdom plans to showcase this project. The Medical Plaza will encompass an international wellness center, a long-term care center, a hospice center, and a rehabilitation center. This initiative is expected to attract a larger influx of tourists, create more employment opportunities, and bolster the local medical industry.
