Bringing pets to Thailand

Bringing pets to Thailand

Many people visit Phuket for vacation or stay longer, but often wonder how to bring their pets to this tropical island. At first glance, the procedure may seem quite complex with an extensive list of requirements, but upon closer examination, it becomes apparent that the requirements are standard for most countries. These requirements include vaccination, a veterinary passport, and chip information. With proper preparation of all the necessary documents, your pet can enjoy the beautiful Thai sunsets with you on Thai soil!

To avoid any delays, we recommend starting the document preparation process one and a half to two months before your departure date. This will allow time for any waiting periods for documents, weekends, holidays, testing, and obtaining missing certificates.

Step 1: Obtain Permission to Bring Your Pet

To bring your pet into Thailand, you need to obtain permission from the s. Within 60 days, but no later than 7 days before departure, send an email to qshk_hkt@dld.go.th for Phuket or qsap_bkk@dld.go.th for Bangkok. In the subject line of the email, indicate "Request an Import Permit." Provide the following information in the body of the email: the applicant's full name, the pet's characteristics (breed, gender, age, chip information), the address in the country of residence, and the address in Thailand, the date, time, and airport of arrival in Thailand, the airport of departure in the country of residence, and the mode of transportation (hand luggage or cargo hold).

Attach the following documents to the email:

  1. Completed Form R1/1 from the veterinary control service, which is required for the import/export of a pet to/from Thailand. Click to download the form. The form mostly duplicates the information from the email (name, date, airport, etc.).
  2. A copy of the accompanying person's passport.
  3. A color photo of the pet.
  4. Travel itinerary: date and airport of arrival, flight number, place of residence in the country of departure and arrival.
  5. International veterinary passport in English with all the pet's information, as well as information about vaccines, certified by a veterinarian and administered no later than 21 days before departure.

Within 3-7 days, you will receive an email with the required import permit if everything is in order. In case of missing information, the veterinary station staff will send you the necessary documents and information to provide.

We recommend preparing copies of all the aforementioned documents in two copies before departure. In addition, the following documents must be present:

-Original passport of the accompanying person

-Original veterinary passport

-Original veterinary certificate in English

Stage 2. Preparation in the country of departure and obtaining a veterinary certificate

Choosing an airline and its loyalty towards traveling with a pet is paramount. Usually, if the weight of the pet does not exceed 8 kg and the size of the carrier complies with the airline's standard rules and fits easily under the seat, then the pet can be taken with you in carry-on luggage. Or the pet can be sent in the cargo hold if the transportation standards exceed the conditions. Each airline has its own requirements, so it is essential to contact the airline in advance to clarify all details.

In addition it is necessary to obtain veterinary certificate, which is issued at a state veterinary clinic.

Stage 3. Arrival in Thailand

Upon arrival, it is necessary to go to the veterinary service at the airport. You can ask the airport staff where the Animal Quarantine Station is located.
